The fate of “Steven Universe” season 6 is still unknown. But if Cartoon Network and series creator Rebecca Sugar would eventually decide to do it, the series is unlikely to continue anytime this year for a good reason.
That reason is that Cartoon Network has announced the release of “Steven Universe: The Movie” in fall. A project as big as this one obviously requires the undivided attention of fans. And since the film is expected to premiere later this year, it seems unlikely for the company to force “Steven Universe” season 6 in the remaining months of 2019.
It is also important to note that a specific release date has not been announced yet for the movie. Cartoon Network also released a teaser that does not seem like a trailer since it does not have any scenes from the film. This could mean that the movie is still in active development leaving no time for Sugar’s team to work on “Steven Universe” season 6 just yet.
The movie was announced last July but it is still unknown how what plot does it have and how will it tie in with the animated series. There is a chance that the film happens in the same timeline that could mean it will dictate how the series will continue. With all these being considered, the best fans can hope for is an announcement or confirmation that “Steven Universe” season 6 is happening.
As mentioned, however, “Steven Universe” season 6 has not been confirmed yet. Though there were earlier indications that seemingly hint at the continuation of the series, many fans and critics agreed that the season 5 ending would suffice as a series finale. Not only did it end a season, but it also provided satisfying conclusions to every story arcs.
On the bright side, Sugar and co-executive producer Ian Jones-Quartey have both mentioned about “moving forward” after the well-received season 5 finale. This gives a good chance for “Steven Universe” season 6 to happen. “Everything will be different,” Jones-Quartey said in a podcast following the season 5 finale. “There's a lot more to do. But, we're not coming back here, because Steven has really figured something out about himself. So this part of the story, you know, that's it.
