‘Supergirl’ season 2 is scheduled to debut on The CW on October 2016. The incoming season is also set to feature Superman in the season premiere alongside Melissa Benoist’s titular superheroine.
According to Deadline, the incoming season for ‘Supergirl’ is set to feature another iconic DC superhero. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, who co-created the series with Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, announced the news of Superman’s appearance for season 2. Kreisberg said, “Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl… We cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape.”
The producer previously admitted that they waited to feature Superman in the flesh since they didn’t want to detract from the series’ focus, Kara Zor-El a.k.a. Supergirl (Melissa Benoist). Although the character was relatively missing from season 1, he was usually referenced and maintained an online correspondence with Kara throughout the series.
According to TV Guide, casting calls for the role of Superman are currently ongoing. It remains unclear whether the iconic superhero will be a recurring character after season 2’s first two episodes. Superman is set to visit his cousin Kara in National City in the season premiere.
Daniel DiMaggio played young Kal-El during one of Kara’s flashbacks of her life in Krypton. No new casting announcements have been made regarding possible actors to play the adult Superman.
The DC character was already adapted numerous times in the small screen with past television series. George Reeves portrayed Superman in ‘Adventures of Superman’ that ran in the 1950s. Dean Cain took over the role in ‘Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman’ in the 1990s, while Tom Welling starred as the caped crusader in ‘Smallville’ in the early 2000s.
Meanwhile, ‘Supergirl’ will be moving to the DC television universe in The CW in the fall. It originally aired on CBS. According to Comicbook.com, the CW already announced a four-way crossover between its shows spanning ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’, ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ and finally, ‘Supergirl’.
The strategic move is part of producer Warner Bros. Television’s intention to cut production costs. Although the show claimed the top spot as CBS’s new drama and fourth-best new series overall among the 18-49 demographic, it proved to be the network’s most expensive show on its first-year run.
‘Supergirl’ season 2 is scheduled to debut on The CW on October 2016.
