Swords to Plowshares and Chinatown Community Development Center Celebrate Groundbreaking of Mission Bay Supportive Housing

San Francisco, CA, March 01, 2018 -- Swords to Plowshares, San Francisco’s leading nonprofit veteran service agency will be breaking ground on their latest housing site for veterans at 1150 3rd Street. A joint venture with Chinatown Community Development Center (Chinatown CDC), the new site will house 62 veterans and 56 low-income families with on-site supportive services offered. This project is the first housing site in the city that will serve a dual purpose of housing both formerly homeless veterans and low-income families in a shared location. 

Swords to Plowshares and Chinatown Community Development Center celebrate the groundbreaking of their latest housing site, which will become home to 62 formerly homeless veterans and 56 low-income families.

A redevelopment project over 10 years in the making, is slated to open in late 2019. "We are grateful to the late Mayor Lee who made this plot of land available to Swords to Plowshares and Chinatown Community Development Center," said Michael Blecker, Swords to Plowshares' executive director. "Collaborative efforts to ending veteran homelessness have led to a significant reduction in the number of chronically homeless veterans. This project is another critical step to getting our most vulnerable veterans housed."

This housing project is the latest partnership between Swords to Plowshares and Chinatown CDC and is an important next step in the city’s efforts to reach and maintain its goal of ending veteran homelessness and reduce the number of families facing homelessness in San Francisco. “Too many veterans and low-income families are without safe, affordable housing and this project is a great opportunity to do just that, give veterans and low-income families a place that they can call home,” said Rev. Norman Fong, Executive Director of CCDC.

With the groundbreaking of this site in Mission Bay, the City and County of San Francisco remain dedicated to its goal of ending veterans’ homelessness. “Ending veterans’ homelessness was a key part of Mayor Lee’s mission and I am committed to continuing that legacy,” said Mayor Mark Farrell. “This project is a reflection of Mayor Lee’s values and a product of his tireless efforts to help others. It is truly fitting that we name this new housing site in his honor.”
