In yet another case of publishers simply stomping all over the dreams of gamers, Take Two forced modders to cancel a mod they have been working on, which would have provider Grand Theft Auto V players the ability to play with the map from Red Dead Redemption. The modding group was apparently contacted and was persuaded to scrap the project.
The modding team working on the map is .White, with someone called Mr. Leisurewear being the lead. In a post on GTAForums.com, Mr. Leisurewear announced that the project would no longer continue.
"I know this is hard pill to swallow, but as you may have noticed we did get contacted,” the post reads. “And we sadly have to say we are stopping this project. So thanks guys, we were all so happy to see this, but it isn't going to happen, sorry."
At first, the modders would not reveal who exactly contacted them that made them drop the map. Eventually, it was reported that it was Take Two that forced the project shutdown, PC Gamer reports. It’s also worth noting that the modders clarified a few things about the project, including the fact that it was not a PC port. It was only ever going to be a map if it had actually gone through.
The project was scrapped after announcing its existence last March, Gamespot reports. At the time, many gamers were excited about the idea that they could be riding through some of RDR’s most iconic locations.
On the other hand, some were also worried that the announcement was premature and that the modders should have waited until it was finished before saying anything. They feared that either Rockstar or Take Two would step in, which is exactly what ended up happening. In any case, the modders will be holding onto the files that they have, which includes three years of effort.
