It’s one thing for Tesla to provide South Australia with what essentially amounts to the largest battery pack in the world. It’s quite another to see just how fast the backup system reacts in case of a power outage. In a recent case, a coal power plant failed, which is becoming more and more frequent in the region. Tesla’s giant battery reacted in milliseconds to prevent a complete shutdown.
According to Renew Economy, the coal plant in question that failed without warning was the Loy Yang A 3. The incident occurred on Thursday at 1:59 a.m., which would have caused the loss of 560MW of power in the area.
While it is worth noting that the backup power source that is also powered by coal did kick in, it was a lot slower compared to Tesla’s giant battery coming to the rescue. The speed at which the battery responded to the incident that occurred almost 1,000km away was simply mind-blowing for energy industry experts.
For some context, it took the plant failure a few moments to finish, but Tesla’s battery had already supplied it with power before it could. Granted, the generator would have turned on about four seconds after the complete shutdown, but that’s hardly the point. The kind of response time that the battery showed is simply unprecedented, especially at the scale that the incident posed.
This allowed the tech giant to showcase exactly how useful its technology can be, which could make Tesla’s batteries integral to the future of the energy industry, Futurism notes. By installing similar setups on their own power grids, it’s possible that countries never have to deal with power outages again.
What’s more, this would also constitute a major win for the renewable energy sector. It would mean helping humanity while also reducing carbon emissions.
