Recent patent filings from Tesla reveal the development of a wireless home EV charging station designed to support its vision for autonomous driving. The technology could provide efficient, hands-free charging for electric vehicles, improving convenience for future Tesla owners.

Tesla Files Patents for Wireless Charging Tech

Multiple recent patent filings have shown off Tesla's forthcoming wireless home EV charging station. Electrek explains that the carmaker has never shown any enthusiasm for wireless charging for its EVs.

There isn't a huge issue that wireless charging fixes. This makes plugging in your car, which isn't particularly laborious or time-consuming, unnecessary.

Self-Charging for Tesla’s Autonomous EVs

However, in preparation for self-driving technologies, Tesla has previously mentioned automating the process. Self-charging capability would be a logical addition to autonomous vehicles if they could drive themselves.

Next, we have the matter of effectiveness. In the past, wireless charging suffered more losses than cable charging. However, newer systems, such as those utilizing magnetic resonance, assert an efficiency level comparable to cable charging, about 95%.

Tesla Shifts from Robotic Charging Solutions

Although wireless charging has been more appealing to Tesla in the past, the company's preference for an autonomous robot arm to accomplish this work has recently shifted.

Above is a new wireless home charging station that Tesla hinted at last year. The only remark the carmaker made was to release this photo for a presentation; they never addressed the subject further.

Having said that, the picture does depict a wireless charging station, and Tesla did, in fact, own a wireless charging company for a while before giving it back (though they did integrate some of its employees).

In addition, Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla's principal designer, has just stated that the company is developing a wireless charging pad.

The Cybertruck's inductive charging ports were also revealed earlier this year, suggesting the possibility of a wireless charging pad retrofit.

Tesla Secures Four Wireless Charging Patents Globally

Now we know that Tesla has filed for four additional wireless charging patents, according to worldwide patent offices:

Although the exact date of Tesla's wireless charging technology unveiling is unknown, it would be fitting if it made an appearance at next month's Robotaxi unveiling, given that the technology has been associated with autonomous vehicles, allowing them to charge independently of human intervention.
