The speculations and guessing game about the release date of “The Elder Scrolls 6” began way before Bethesda Softworks officially announced the game. Many are hoping for a 2019 launch but a recent report suggested why the wait could be extended to two more years.
GamesRadar, with information from YouTuber Skullzi TV, reports that the release of “The Elder Scrolls 6” could be delayed as far as 2021 because of Bethesda's legal issues over trademarking “Redfall.” Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media, previously filed an application to trademark “Redfall” presumably for the official title of the game sequel in September 2018. But, as of earlier this month, its status reads, “Opposition Pending.”
The word “Redfall” in this case likely holds a significant meaning to the entire gameplay plot. So simply changing it to avoid legal problems is not as easy as it sounds. Zenimax's trademark application has been challenged by Jay J. Falconer who authored a “Redfall” book series in 2016 published by BookBreeze.com. The same report revealed that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has assigned a trial date as late as August 2020. Assuming that things would not be resolved by then, a 2021 release date for “The Elder Scrolls 6” is quite plausible.
Meanwhile, Falconer has since responded to the article implying that his camp offered Bethesda and ZeniMax Media a deal to expedite the proceedings. It would have prevented a supposed delay in the “The Elder Scrolls 6” launch.
“My lawyers made attempts to contact gaming company to work out a simple licensing deal for them to use my Redfall name. They ignored me every time. Shame. Left me no choice. All could have been avoided. Just call my attorneys back,” Falconer tweeted to GamesRadar's Zoe Delahunty-Light. With Bethesda caught up in a legal scuffle, it could be more difficult to predict the gameplay and plot details of “The Elder Scrolls 6.”
