‘The Lego Movie 2’ has been delayed to a 2019 release. The film is currently undergoing script revisions under ‘BoJack Horseman’ creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg.
According to Cinema Blend, the sequel to Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s animated action-adventure film of the same name has been pushed back considerably by Warner Bros. Lord and Miller are staying on as producers but are busy at work with the new ‘Star Wars: Han Solo’ spin-off film scheduled for release on May 2018.
Rob Schrab is taking over as the new director in his film directorial debut. He co-wrote the Academy Award nominated animated children’s horror film ‘Monster House’ and co-created Comedy Central's ‘The Sarah Silverman Program’. He directed some episodes on ‘The Sarah Silverman Program’ as well as other comedic television series such as ‘Community’, ‘The Mindy Project’, ‘Parks and Recreation’, and ‘Workaholics’.
The upcoming film also has a new writer attached. According to Variety, Warner Bros. hired Raphael Bob-Waksberg to do some script revisions for the screenplay originally penned by Lord and Miller. It was reported that the studio wanted a “fresh take” on the sequel’s story. Bob-Waksberg is best known for creating Netflix’s adult animated sitcom ‘BoJack Horseman’, which stars Will Arnett in the title role.
‘The Lego Movie 2’ is an upcoming action-adventure animated film scheduled to be released on February 8, 2019 in the United States. It was originally slated to premiere on May 18, 2018. It is produced by Lord, Miller, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin with Will Allegra, Matthew Ashton, Kara Lord, Chris McKay, John Powers Middleton, Greg Silverman, and Courtenay Valenti executive producing.
Its predecessor achieved critical praise and won several accolades including a BAFTA Award for Best Animated film, an Annie Award for Writing in an Animated Feature Production, and a British Academy Children’s Award for Children’s Feature Film in 2014. It was also nominated for an Academy Award, an Empire Award, a Golden Globe Award, a People’s Choice Award, and a Grammy Award among others.
It was also a financial success at the box office, grossing $469.16 million worldwide against a $60 million production budget.
