The forum runs Wednesday through Friday at the Rosewood Tucker’s Point Resort, attracting some of the world’s key influencers and elite trust and private-client sector professionals. In particular, delegates are travelling to the island from numerous Latin American nations—including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama and Uruguay—following the BDA’s attendance of last year’s event in Costa Rica.
“Eighteen months ago, the BDA identified several major target markets in the trust and private-client sector, including China, Canada and Latin America,” says BDA CEO Ross Webber. “Bringing this conference to Bermuda, during the shoulder season, is a direct result of our focussed strategic efforts and benefits the island from a tourism, airlift and business perspective. Getting leading influencers to physically come to Bermuda is the best business promotion we can do as a jurisdiction.”
Alongside leading private-client lawyers from 14 jurisdictions around the world, the speaker faculty will include keynote presentations from Bermuda’s Chief Justice Ian Kawaley, political analyst and broadcaster Gloria Álvarez of Guatemala, and former US banking regulator Ross Delston.
“Legal Week events are consistently impressive in terms of the quality of attendees and content,” noted Sean Moran, Business Development Manager for the trust and private-client sector, who attended the 2015 forum with Webber. “We felt this type of gathering would be perfectly suited to Bermuda, given its impressive clientèle and its focus on issues relevant to North, South and Central America. Thanks to the hard work of our BDA events team and the support of local stakeholder companies, we managed to bring the forum to Bermuda. We’re thrilled to welcome the Legal Week team, speakers and delegates here this week.”
Chaired by leading New York-based wealth-management lawyer Joshua Rubenstein, of Katten Muchin Rosenman, this year’s forum focusses on the changing landscape for those advising ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs). The event agenda explores fast-evolving geo-political, regulatory and cross-border planning issues affecting the trust and private-client sphere, particularly those advising Latin American wealth.
“We are delighted to be bringing a high-level delegation of private-client lawyers to Bermuda for this year’s Private Client Forum Americas,” said John Malpas, Legal Week’s Publishing Director, who noted the event is firmly established as a “must-attend” conference for international private-client lawyers with client interests in the Americas.
“After taking the event to Arizona, California and Costa Rica in past years, Legal Week is excited to showcase the wonderful island of Bermuda to our prestigious delegation,” he said.
Bermuda was one of the first international trust jurisdictions and over the decades has become established as a premier jurisdiction for private-client structures. Among Bermuda’s advantages are a superior regulatory framework and judicial system, as well as globally recognised practitioners who serve a broad spectrum of international businesses and high-net-worth clients.
