U.S. President Donald Trump has called for Democratic Senator Adam Schiff to be “brought to justice,” accusing him of mortgage fraud linked to a property in Maryland. The allegations center on claims that Schiff misrepresented the home as his primary residence to secure a better mortgage rate. Trump posted on Truth Social that Fannie Mae had found a “sustained pattern of possible mortgage fraud” involving Schiff, calling him “crooked” and demanding legal action.
The New York Post reported that the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which oversees Fannie Mae, referred the case to the Justice Department for potential prosecution. However, officials from the DOJ, FHFA, and Fannie Mae have declined to comment.
Schiff, a prominent figure in Trump’s 2020 impeachment proceedings, strongly denied the allegations. He described Trump’s claims as politically motivated retaliation, stating on social media, “This is just Donald Trump’s latest attempt at political retaliation against his perceived enemies.”
A spokesperson for Schiff explained that both mortgage lenders were aware he uses homes in both Maryland and California throughout the year. Like many members of Congress, Schiff maintains residences in both his home state and Washington, D.C.
Schiff has long been a top target for Trump, particularly since leading the first impeachment inquiry over Trump’s alleged effort to pressure Ukraine into investigating Joe Biden. While Trump was impeached in the House, he was acquitted by the Republican-led Senate.
The new accusations mark a fresh chapter in the ongoing feud between the two political figures, further intensifying scrutiny ahead of the 2026 election cycle. The case remains under review, and no formal charges have been filed.
