French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump to the Palace of Versailles on Wednesday, highlighting efforts to strengthen U.S.-France relations and improve broader transatlantic cooperation.

The historic meeting took place at the iconic Palace of Versailles, the former royal residence of King Louis XIV, widely known as the Sun King. Macron and Brigitte greeted Trump on the palace steps before posing for official photographs. Admiring the landmark, Trump described Versailles as “beautiful” and expressed enthusiasm about the invitation.

Speaking during the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains a day earlier, Trump said he accepted Macron’s invitation because he appreciates historic and visually impressive locations. He praised the palace, calling it “the real deal” and suggested it may be one of the most beautiful palaces in the world. On Wednesday, he again voiced excitement about attending the state dinner with Macron and Brigitte Macron at the renowned French landmark.

The visit comes as relations between the United States and several European allies have faced challenges in recent years. Key issues have included trade tariffs, tensions surrounding Iran, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Despite past disagreements, officials from both sides indicated that the recent G7 summit produced positive outcomes, including a joint statement on Ukraine.

Versailles has long been a symbol of French power and prestige. Constructed under the direction of Louis XIV in the 17th century, the palace was designed to showcase the influence and grandeur of the French monarchy. Today, although France is a republic, the venue remains an important setting for hosting world leaders and major diplomatic events.

According to Jeffrey Hawkins, a former U.S. diplomat and expert on French-American relations, welcoming foreign leaders in prestigious locations can help build stronger personal and political connections. He noted that leaders often seek to create an atmosphere where visiting counterparts feel respected and valued.

As Trump’s motorcade approached Versailles, crowds gathered along the route to catch a glimpse of the U.S. president, underscoring the global attention surrounding the high-profile diplomatic engagement.
