President Donald Trump said Tuesday his party would have won the midterms by a landslide if his name had been on the ballot; Democrats have since won control of Congress.
In a Truth Social post Tuesday evening, Trump wrote, “I wasn’t on the ballot, and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE.”
During the campaign, he urged supporters to “pretend I’m on the ballot” and cast the congressional races as a measure of his record. EconoTimes previously covered his appeal for voters to treat the midterms as a test of his political standing.
The Associated Press has called Democrats winners of both the House and Senate. The Independent reported that counting was unfinished and millions of ballots had yet to be included when its report appeared. It also described Democratic seat gains in Texas and South Carolina, states traditionally viewed as Republican strongholds.
Politico reported in September that some Republicans in competitive House races feared Trump’s campaign presence could hurt them, amid voter frustration over the Iran war and the cost of living.
