A joint celebration of U.S. President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday and the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary will include a large-scale military parade in Washington, D.C., featuring up to 25 M1 Abrams tanks and more than 6,500 troops. According to U.S. officials, the cost could reach $45 million, significantly more than initially planned due to the addition of the parade. The celebration, scheduled for June 14 on the National Mall, also aligns with the Army’s historic milestone.
The U.S. Army had already planned a major display of military personnel, 150 vehicles, and 50 aircraft to commemorate its founding. However, the event has now expanded to include a presidential birthday tribute, leading to increased logistical costs and additional security and infrastructure requirements. City expenses, such as road repairs from tank damage and cleanup, are not included in federal estimates.
Critics argue the display resembles authoritarian-style military parades often seen in other nations and question the cost at a time when the federal government is cutting spending in other areas. Supporters say it honors military tradition and showcases U.S. strength.
This isn’t Trump’s first attempt at a grand military celebration. After being inspired by France’s Bastille Day parade in 2017, he pushed for a similar event that was ultimately canceled due to its projected $90 million cost. He later held a scaled-down version during the Fourth of July in 2019, featuring tanks and flyovers.
While military parades are rare in the U.S., they have occurred following major conflicts, such as the 1991 Gulf War. This year’s dual celebration marks a unique convergence of military tradition and political spectacle.
