Recently, Twitter rolled out new anti-troll measures that are meant to curb the rampant abuse of privileges on the micro-blogging platform. Unfortunately, the social media network had to roll one of these measures back after it was met with widespread criticism since it prevented users from getting notifications after getting added to lists. This highlights Twitter’s biggest problem, which appears to be a considerable lack of competence when it comes to dealing with abusive users.
The solution in question pertains to the notification that users would get if they have been added to a Twitter list, which the company Tweeted about recently. This is just one of several fixes that the social media company has been rolling out recently, in order to stamp out trolls.
“We want you to get notifications that matter. Starting today, you won't get notified when you are added to a list,” the Tweet reads.
Despite Twitter’s good intentions in implementing this new system, it was met with a barrage of criticisms from users. Many of them complained that it was important for them to be notified if they have been added to the list, particularly when the list was a target.
Now, it’s worth noting that hardly anyone uses the List feature, to begin with, TechCrunch notes. However, there are still many on the micro-blogging site who need it in order to keep their accounts organized. Power users are particularly fond of the feature since they have so many accounts to keep track of.
Of course, being added to a list can be problematic, especially if the intent is to harass the user. Trolls can add people to lists with offensive labels, for example, just because they Tweeted something that the trolls didn’t like. Even with this screw-up, it’s still clear that Twitter is determined to fix the problems on its platform. Perhaps next time, they could come up with a better solution.
