Delivery riders in the United Arab Emirates will need approved equipment for carrying orders and valid professional permits from Jan. 1, 2027, under federal traffic rules, Gulf News reported.

The outlet said Cabinet Decision No. 174 of 2026 implements Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 on traffic regulation. It lists eight duties for professional drivers and delivery vehicle operators, covering cargo, vehicle systems, appearance, permits and restricted items.

Couriers must use approved equipment to carry orders and meet loading requirements; backpacks are prohibited. A rider may not carry a passenger on a motorcycle licensed for delivery services while carrying out delivery duties, Gulf News reported. Drivers must sign in to the approved system installed in their vehicle and follow its instructions.

Professional drivers have to wear the required uniform and maintain a presentable appearance. They must carry their professional permits and show them to authorities on request. The rules prohibit transporting or delivering banned items, including goods that violate public order. Drivers cannot conduct professional work without a valid permit or with an expired one. They must also satisfy any further requirements that the licensing authority or traffic enforcement authority applies to them.

The report also describes rules for motorcycle riders. They must wear protective helmets and travel single file unless circumstances call for another arrangement. Riders must keep both hands on the handlebars except when using one hand to signal. Weaving, dangerous speeds and any other operation that could endanger the public are prohibited. They cannot have another vehicle tow or propel a motorcycle, and can carry passengers only if it is equipped for them.

The wider traffic package also limits driving to nine hours within any 24-hour period, subject to adjustment by the Federal Traffic Council, the Emirates News Agency reported. EconoTimes previously covered the nine-hour driving limit.
