Powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday have prompted an immediate response from the United States, which is coordinating with Venezuelan authorities and preparing emergency assistance for the disaster-hit nation. The strong tremors caused severe damage across western regions and the capital, Caracas, leaving buildings collapsed, people trapped under debris, and raising concerns over a potentially high death toll and widespread destruction.

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau confirmed on X that the U.S. government is in direct contact with Venezuelan officials following what he described as the devastating earthquakes. He stated that Washington is mobilizing support to assist those affected by the natural disaster.

The U.S. State Department has also activated a disaster assistance team and a dedicated task force to coordinate relief operations. According to State Department official Jeremy Lewin, the United States is working closely with partners in Venezuela’s interim government to deliver urgent humanitarian aid. Planned assistance includes search and rescue teams, medical supplies, emergency relief materials, and other critical resources aimed at helping communities during the crucial first days of recovery.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Caracas confirmed that all American personnel in Venezuela are safe and accounted for despite the powerful seismic event.

The emergency response comes amid improving diplomatic relations between the United States and Venezuela. Bilateral ties have strengthened in recent months following the January operation that resulted in the capture of then-President Nicolas Maduro. Since then, President Donald Trump’s administration has recognized and engaged with an interim government led by former Maduro ally Delcy Rodriguez.

The renewed relationship has expanded beyond diplomacy. The U.S. has approved sanctions waivers designed to encourage American investment in Venezuela while also reaching an agreement allowing the sale of Venezuelan oil to the United States. As rescue efforts continue following the deadly earthquakes, both governments are expected to work together to accelerate humanitarian relief and support recovery efforts for affected communities across Venezuela.
