The Ministry of ICT of Uganda has announced that the governments intends to leverage emerging technologies such as blockchain to improve the efficiency in public service delivery, Daily Monitor reported.
Speaking in Kampala last week, the ICT ministry permanent secretary Vicente Bagiire Waiswa said that the use of technology will place Uganda at par with its counterparts around the world in the global marketplace which is now being driven largely by technology.
“Government is going to use blockchain technology where it is appropriate to provide seamless services to the general public,” he said, adding it was time the country adopted technology for economic inclusion.
Countries all across the globe are exploring the potential of blockchain technology in several sectors – from real estate, to supply chain management, to energy trading and beyond. Recently, the government of Ethiopia announced plans to test blockchain potential in the supply chain traceability of coffee.
Bagire said that blockchain use will help to reduce the time taken by people to access government services such as tax payment.
Kwame Rugunda, the chairman of Blockchain Association, said the use of blockchain technology will enhance the value and efficiency in service delivery such as payment systems and record management among other things.
