Walmart is doubling down on generative artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline customer experiences, unveiling three groundbreaking AI-powered technologies at the CES tech conference.
The retail giant, under CEO Doug McMillon's leadership, is leveraging these advancements to enhance both in-store and online shopping, aiming to make the retail experience more futuristic.
Automated Fridge Restocking With InHome Replenishment
A notable addition is the "InHome Replenishment" service, a feature tailored for Walmart+ members.
This AI-driven capability studies shopping habits and purchase patterns, creating personalized algorithms to replenish essentials in customers' refrigerators precisely when needed.
Unlike fixed monthly schedules, the system adjusts dynamically, ensuring items like milk are restocked at optimal intervals, offering flexibility and convenience.
Grocery orders are automatically processed and delivered to customers' homes, allowing adjustments at any time, showcasing Walmart's commitment to enhancing the shopping journey.
Efficiency Boost at Sam's Club: AI Simplifies Checkout and Exit
Walmart's membership warehouse club, Sam's Club, is already harnessing AI to revolutionize the checkout experience.
Customers can pay for physical goods without traditional checkouts through an app, saving time and enhancing convenience.
According to CBS News, the company is implementing AI to eliminate the need for customers to present digital receipts at the exit.
Currently active in Dallas, the new exit technology allows shoppers to seamlessly walk through a digital archway, holding purchased items, reducing wait times. Walmart plans to roll out this innovative exit technology nationwide by the year's end.
Digital Shopping Innovation: AI-Fueled Outfit Sharing
Another remarkable addition to Walmart's digital shopping experience is a feature allowing users of the Walmart app to create and share digital outfits with friends for feedback.
Leveraging AI, this feature streamlines decision-making by letting friends interact with and provide input on digital outfits. This showcases Walmart's commitment to enhancing customer engagement through innovative technologies.
According to ABC News, Doug McMillon emphasized that Walmart aims to deploy AI to ease the lives of its over 2 million associates, focusing on eliminating mundane tasks that don't require human judgment.
While acknowledging that AI may replace specific tasks and jobs, McMillon highlighted that the new roles created by Walmart are often more fulfilling and enjoyable and come with increased pay, positively impacting the overall workforce.
