Although it’s over 16 years old, Warcraft III is still one of Blizzard’s most beloved games and is still played by a lot of dedicated fans today. Recently, the publisher gave these players a huge reason to celebrate by announcing a tournament around the real-time strategy (RTS) title. Blizzard also released an update to the game, adding fuel to the rumor fires that a Warcraft III remaster was on the way.
The video game company made the announcement via a post on the Battle.net forums, providing details about the event and even listing players who will be attending. Suffice it to say, the list includes some pretty well-known Warcraft III competitors.
“Hosted by casters Neo and Remo of Back2Warcraft, join us on February 27 and February 28 on Twitch for a slew of special events, including Free-for-All, 4v4’s, and other friendly competitions. Well-known Warcraft III competitors from around the world will be getting together live at Blizzard HQ to showcase their talents in friendly competition!” the post reads.
“We love and continue to support our Warcraft III community, and we’re excited to see classic competitors like Manuel “Grubby” Schenkhuizen, Park “Lyn” Joon, and Kim “ReMinD” Sung Sik try out all the new PTR changes for themselves—including balance adjustments to many heroes, widescreen support, and more – all playable now on the PTR!”
The announcement for the tournament is exciting enough but as Kotaku notes, one of the most unusual aspects of this development is the changes to the in-game editor. For those who don’t remember, this is basically where players can create their own custom maps. It’s also responsible for spawning the era of Defense of the Ancients (DOTA).
Now, it could be entirely possible that Blizzard is just doing this to cater to fans who might be craving for a nostalgic run at their favorite classic game. However, it could be equally probable that the company is gearing up to announce the remastered version.
