Every year, Apple releases new software updates exclusive to its devices and computers. However, it has also become common for Apple to limit the compatibility of new iOS versions to later released devices for various reasons. That is the case for iOS 13, which will not be supporting a couple of iPhone models that Apple has not yet declared obsolete.
iOS 13: List of compatible devices
On the bright side, there remains a long list of iPhones and iPads that will be compatible with iOS 13. Previous rumors suggested the iPhone SE will no longer be supported by iOS 13. But Apple dismissed such reports, and iOS 13 can still be installed on the said device.
Meanwhile, iPhones released from 2015 are also compatible with iOS 13. These include iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, iPhone 7, 7 Plus, iPhone 8, 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, XS Max, iPhone XR, and the rumored three new models to be announced in fall dubbed in many reports as the iPhone 11. As for non-iPhone devices, Apple only listed the 7th-generation iPod Touch to be supported by iOS 13.
Is iPadOS different from iOS 13?
Apple announced the iPadOS software last June at the Worldwide Developers Conference. As the name hints, it is also a mobile operating system developed and designed based on iOS. All new features, security improvements, and updates found on iOS 13 will be available in iPadOS as well.
However, tech fans may have also noticed over the years of iOS releases that several features are made uniquely for iPads. What Apple is doing this year is simply rebranding iOS for its iPad products. With that, the first version of iPadOS will be compatible with 5th- and 6th-gen iPad, 3rd-gen iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 4, and iPad Pro models (9.7”, 10.5”, 11”, and 12.9”).
iOS 13 release date, new features
The iOS 13 is still in public beta, but the full version is confirmed to be released this year. It will most likely come out by September along with the new iPhones.
Many are excited about iOS 13 because of its new features and improvements. Expect several new photo and video editing tools this year along with an interesting added feature on FaceTime that forces eye contact during a video call session.
