‘Stranger Things’ season 2 released promotional photographs that teased Will’s life back in Hawkings following his entrapment in the Upside Down. Meanwhile, actor David Harbour revealed that his character Jim Hopper will be a different and changed man in the upcoming season.
According to Polygon, the first promotional photographs for the second season of ‘Stranger Things’ hinted at Will’s (Noah Schnapp) new life following his harrowing experience in the Upside Down. Will returned to his real home in Hawkins, Indiana by the end of the previous season but it was teased that he may have brought something sinister back with him.
The teaser revealed that Will will continue to experience emotional, psychological, and even physical effects of the trauma. It was previously speculated that the character may transform into something resembling a Demogorgon along the way.
Meanwhile, during an interview with TV Guide, David Harbour admitted that season 2 placed a huge amount of pressure on the hit Netflix series’ cast and crew. He said during the Writers Guild Awards, “We're completely terrified… We want it to be even better than Season 1." He continued, "I got the script for the first episode of Season 2 and within the first five minutes I was on my feet going like, 'Yes! Yes!’… If we do our jobs, I feel like we have a really exciting season ahead of us."
The 41-year old American actor is expected to reprise his role as Jim Hopper, one of the series’ main characters. Hopper is the chief of Hawkins Police Department and was first introduced in season 1’s premiere episode. He is known to be emotionally reserved and cynical and relied on alcohol and prescription medication to help him cope with his daughter’s death and his eventual divorce from wife Diane.
Despite his misgivings, Hopper helped rescue Joyce Byers’ (Winona Ryder) son Will from the ominous world of the Upside Down. Harbour revealed that his character will be a changed man in season 2 and will have to deal with the consequences of his actions from season 1. However, he remained mum on details.
Joining Harbour in season 2’s line-up are Millie Bobbie Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer, and Charlie Heaton. New cast members will also be introduced including Paul Reiser of ‘Mad About You’ fame, who is reportedly playing a character named Dr. Owens.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, creators Ross and Matt Duffer likened Dr. Owens to Reiser’s character, Burke, on the feature film ‘Aliens.’ Ross Duffer admitted, “We want people to have those debates like, ‘Do you trust that guy or is he Burke?'… Paul was saying the reason James Cameron cast him is because he thought people would inherently trust him and it would be a twist.”
When asked to address his new role, Reiser said, “[The Duffer Brothers] told me who I was playing and they told me what they had in mind. It was sort of nebulous — is he a good guy or a bad guy? To be honest, I’ve only read a few of the scripts so I still don’t know and I’m not sure they know.”
He continued, “I think part of what they were tickled by was, to whatever extent people know me from Aliens, they’re automatically going, “Oh this guy is no good.” I don’t know where they’re going with it but it’s a fun thing to play.”
‘Stranger Things’ season 2 is expected to be released on Netflix on October 31, 2017.
