“The Winds of Winter” is still in the works and fans could no longer hide their frustration as they wait for it to be released. This is because its author, George RR Martin, already broke his promise to publish “TWOW” at least twice in the past eight years.
The delays explained
Martin doesn’t deny the fact that he is very late already. The book was due a long time ago and yet he is still writing up to now. He recently admitted that he is also frustrated because “The Winds of Winter” could have been published by now if he was only able to finish it on time.
“I know there are a lot of people out there who are very angry with me that Winds of Winter isn’t finished,” the now 71-year-old author told Entertainment Weekly in 2018. “And I’m mad about that myself. I wished I finished it four years ago. I wished it was finished now. But it’s not.”
Apparently, he is blaming “writer’s block” as the reason for the delay but fans are also pointing out that there are other reasons such as his involvement in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and other projects that eat up his time. It should be noted that he is also often invited to conventions so writing for “The Winds of Winter” keeps taking the back seat.
What’s the author’s latest update?
George RR Martin’s latest promise to publish “The Winds of Winter” was posted in May last year. He said that he will make sure that the book will be in his hands when he goes to New Zealand to attend the WorldCon.
This event was scheduled from July 29 to Aug. 2 so it can be speculated that this is the release date. However, the WorldCon will not push through due to the COVID-19 crisis so it is not certain if he will still keep his promise. Recently, he said that he is locked up in the mountains and all he does is write since he is in self-isolation but it is yet to be confirmed if he is able to finish the book.
What will happen if he can’t finish “TWOW”
Martin is already 71 years old and he is not as healthy as before too. Some fans fear that he will not be able to finish and publish “The Winds of Winter” due to his age and health condition. The author was actually asked about his a few years ago and he revealed what will happen if he can’t complete the sixth and seventh book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series.
In an interview, he revealed that he hasn’t written down what will happen in the story. Thus, in case something happened to him, apparently, fans will not know how “ASOIAF” should end. “Nope. It’s all in my head. So if I die, you all are s*** out of luck,” he said.
