“13 Reasons Why” season 3 is reportedly going to start production later this year. This is despite the fact that the American teen drama’s season 2 received low ratings from critics compared to the previous one.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the first season of the suicide drama an 80 percent rating, while the second installment had a measly 26 percent. Regardless of what the critics say, it seems Netflix still has some hope for the series given that it has already green-lighted its third season," OtakuArt reported.
What Netflix has divulged so far is that “13 Reasons Why” season 3 will be released in 2019 with a total of 13 episodes. The production side of things will be handled by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content.
Moreover, most of the cast of the show will be returning with the exception of Katherine Langford, the Australian actress who plays Hannah Baker and her ghost in season 2. Langford said that although she isn’t part of the series going forward, she hopes to maintain her relationship with the teen drama’s fans even in small ways. “I think '13 Reasons Why' will always be an important part of my life. It was the first job I ever had,” Langford said.
Among the criticisms that the second season received was regarding the weak plotting of the show, which diminished the brilliant acting of the cast showcased during the first and second seasons. Digital Spy said that Dylan Minnette and his co-stars were some of the few reasons why the show didn’t plummet far lower than it did.
Mashable explained that there are plenty of scenes that could’ve been subtle instead of being heavy-handed, and cut-and-dry instead of being nuanced. Moreover, the digital media added that monologues spent in the courtroom concerning the disparity of reputations among genders should’ve been better spent as being illustrated by scenes and characters. Indeed, this criticism stems from the age-old rule of writing and filmmaking “show, don’t tell.”
Whether or not “13 Reasons Why” Season 3 will be met with harsher reviews similar to what it received for season 2 remains to be seen. What is certain is that the solid cast will likely bring their A-game again when the series gets released, as they proved to be able to do in the first two installments.
