Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE) is expanding its Firefly generative AI service by integrating image-generation models from OpenAI and Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL), while also making the app available on mobile devices. This move significantly enhances the creative flexibility offered to users of Adobe’s software suite, including Photoshop and Premiere.
Since 2023, Adobe has developed its own Firefly models for image and video generation, assuring users of legal protection when using its proprietary AI content. On Thursday, the company confirmed that Firefly users can now generate visuals using OpenAI’s generative tools, Google’s Imagen 3 and Veo 2, as well as Flux 1.1 Pro. Adobe is also rolling out an upgraded version of its own Firefly model.
Future integrations will include AI models from fal.ai, Luma, and Runway, allowing creatives to explore diverse tools for ideation and production. According to Ely Greenfield, Adobe’s CTO for digital media, many customers still prioritize Adobe’s Firefly models for commercial use due to their safety assurances. However, others are eager to experiment with third-party models during earlier stages of content development.
Content generated with these models can be seamlessly transferred to Adobe’s core applications. All model usage—whether Adobe’s own or from third-party partners—will be covered under the same credit-based payment system. Adobe has not disclosed revenue-sharing terms with external model providers.
The integration of third-party AI into Firefly underscores Adobe’s evolving approach to AI creativity and positions Firefly as a central hub for both professional-grade and experimental content generation. As demand for generative AI in creative workflows grows, Adobe’s ecosystem expansion is aimed at keeping it competitive and user-centric.
