“Alita: Battle Angel 2” sequel is awaited but there is no announcement yet if James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez are doing a second movie installment. It also depends on Disney if it will produce a sequel to the film adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's manga.
The expectation for the “Alita: Battle Angel” was low when it premiered in February but contrary to the predictions that it will be a flop, the movie grossed over US$403 million worldwide. The domestic earnings were $85 million while the rest were from international ticket sales, as per Box Office Mojo.
In any case, the total production budget used for “Alita: Battle Angel” was said to be $170 million and this means the movie earned enough for a break even. Now, since the movie obviously made money, the likelihood for the production of “Alita: Battle Angel 2” is high.
Moreover, Screen Rant noted that “Alita: Battle Angel 2” is most likely to come because the debut film’s ending was set up for a sequel. The publication explained that the first Alita movie showed the protagonist discovering about her past as a Berserker.
She also came to know about her relationship with "father" Ido, develop skills at Motorball and she is starting a romance with Hugo. With these scenarios, “Alita: Battle Angel 2” is surely coming.
What’s more, James Cameron told Digital Spy when asked if there will be a sequel to Alita, "Well, we obviously have a plan for that. But it's cheeky to set up a sequel before you're proven. That can blow back in your face.”
He added, “We think of something like Warcraft that was clearly set up with the intention to do sequels, and then it becomes mock-able because the film doesn't succeed. But I don't worry about stuff like that. If the film fails, it's its own punishment, you know? It doesn't matter if we get mocked on top of having failed."
