Panama Leak is being considered as the biggest leak of secretive documents ever, which saw prominent people from politics, sports, and businessmen set up companies offshore basically to hide their wealth and possibly evade tax. Panama is well known for its secrecy and tax haven status and it derives its powers from the Panama Canal, through which billions of Dollars’ worth of goods travels through. The canal connects Pacific Ocean to Atlantic Ocean.
- 11.5 million Records connected to 214,488 entities related to people from 200 countries and territories have been leaked from law firm Mossack Fonseca. Records include emails, financial spreadsheets, passport details, etc.
- Data leak goes back to as early as 1977 and as latest as 2015.
- So far the findings, connect to 72 current and former heads of state or people linked to them.
- Names released so far includes, 12 acting or former world leaders, such as Mr. Marci, president of Argentina, Sigmundur Gunlauggson, Prime Minister of Iceland, Petro Poroshenko, Ukrainian president, King Salman of Saudi Arabia. Prime Minister David Cameron’s name also got involved, thanks to his deceased further.
- Other prominent names include Lionel Messi, Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, close aides of Vladimir Putin, Son of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.
It is likely to create a wave of political turmoil across globe. Prime Minister of Iceland has already quit his job.
