Amazon is currently dominating the smart assistant market with Alexa and its Echo speakers, but the online merchant giant is planning to extend its list of products to include smart glasses and smart security cameras. What’s more, it seems some fairly interesting technology is in the works, including sending soundwaves directly into the skull.
Reportedly set for release by the end of 2017, the two products that Amazon is working on are apparently intended to be integrated into the Alexa framework, Business Insider reports. With regards to the security camera, it would be compatible with the Echo speakers or just the smart assistant. This would then allow users to stream live footage on the Echo Show or via their smartphones.
What’s more, the smart camera is also apparently going to send notifications to owners if it detects people moving or stepping up close to it. This would certainly make for a useful anti-theft system, especially for those going on vacation.
Then there are the smart glasses that Amazon is currently developing. The glasses will apparently house Alexa, but it will only work if it is connected to the user’s smartphone. The glasses won’t have a camera either, which should remove the concern that some people have had with smart glasses in the past. Think Google Glass and the ensuing fiasco involving its release to the general public.
On the other hand, this doesn’t mean that Amazon is not putting some new technology into the glasses. The company will supposedly be replacing headphones by allowing the wearable to send sound directly into the wearer’s skull, CNBC reports.
This will largely be centered on the user’s interaction with Alexa. Whenever the user asks the smart assistant a question or requests for information, no one else will be able to hear the response besides the one wearing the glasses.
