A company’s reputation has a huge impact on its performance and sales. In the case of Apple, it was one of the most reputable and trusted tech giants in 2015. Unfortunately for the iPhone maker, its reputation has since gone downhill. According to the results of the most recent Harris Poll Reputation Quotient survey, for example, Apple fell from the No. 5 spot to No. 29th.
The survey is meant to look at the state of a company’s relevance in the eyes of consumers to see which of them are the most visible in the mass market. Even though it still commands a huge market share of smartphones, it would seem that Apple is no longer the trailblazing entity that it once was. Google saw similar drops, as well, which Harris Poll CEO John Gerzema is attributing to the lack of innovative technology from both companies, Reuters reports.
“Google and Apple, at this moment, are sort of in valleys,” Gerzema theorized. “We’re not quite to self-driving cars yet. We’re not yet seeing all the things in artificial intelligence they’re going to do.”
Supporting this theory is how both companies maintained top spots whenever they introduced new things that simply blew the minds of consumers everywhere. Examples include Google Docs and the first unveiling of the iPod.
Amazon still maintains the No. 1 spot, MacRumors reports, as it has over the past several years. Tesla rockets to the No. 3 position from its No. 9 spot during the last survey.
At this point, there’s no telling how the results of this new poll will affect the companies that are listed on it, but the data does paint a compelling picture of the current state of the tech industry. In the case of Apple, it reflects the sentiment that many publications and users have been saying; Apple is no longer the company that it was under Steve Jobs.
