Amidst circulating rumors, Apple's potential venture into a smart ring sparks curiosity. Speculations suggest health monitoring features and innovative control mechanisms.
Potential Features
According to a February rumor in MacRumors, Apple is "speeding up development" on a bright ring with health-related features.
An Apple Ring, like the Apple Watch, could monitor heart rate, activity, sleep, and respiratory rate and use that data to provide users with sleep insights and health recommendations.
Apple may also use an intelligent ring as an input device for the iPhone, iPad, Vision Pro, or Mac.
Ring vs. Watch
Apple already has an Apple Watch that can track various health metrics, but an intelligent ring would be more suitable for certain activities. A ring may be preferable for sleep or when the wrists must be covered, such as when wearing supportive wrist wraps.
Because a ring lacks a display, it is less likely to require a constant connection to an iPhone or other Apple device, resulting in longer battery life. Unlike the Apple Watch, an intelligent ring collects data via Bluetooth but does not sync it in real time to the iPhone.
Apple Ring vs. the Competition
Samsung is developing a Galaxy Ring, which is expected to be released in the second half of this year. The ring can monitor heart rate, activity, and sleep, make wireless payments, and control Samsung devices.
Companies such as Oura and Ultrahuman have produced and sold smart rings for several years. The third-generation Oura ring can track activity and measure heart rate, respiratory rate, and sleep quality.
The Ultrahuman Ring Air monitors heart rate, skin temperature, respiratory rate, recovery time, and sleep.
Apple Ring Patents
Apple has patented innovative ring technology. One patent, for example, describes how a smart ring (or several smart rings) could control a virtual reality headset. The ring's sensors would collect user input and provide feedback via haptic output.
Another patent describes using a ring with a touch-sensitive display to control a TV or tablet, and a third envisions an intelligent ring with NFC.
Release Date
While the Electronic Times reported that Apple is seriously considering an intelligent ring, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman's February report states that the Apple Ring is currently only an idea and is not being actively developed. While there appear to be people within Apple promoting the smart ring concept, it would be premature to speculate on a possible Apple Ring launch date.
The appeal would be to provide people with a "low-cost way to gather key health data without the need to wear a full-blown watch."
