Apple may introduce its first foldable iPhone by 2026, aiming for a significant hardware redesign to compete with Samsung and Huawei.

Apple's Foldable iPhone Has Moved Past the Concept Stage

According to Tuesday's story in The Information, Apple's foldable iPhone could be unveiled as early as 2026. This would be the most significant redesign of Apple's most popular product's hardware to date.

Samsung Electronics, based in South Korea, was an early adopter of the foldable market segment in 2019 in an effort to entice new consumers with a substantial hardware design revamp; the Cupertino, California-based corporation may follow suit with its planned introduction of a foldable iPhone.

The article cited two sources familiar with the situation to state that Apple's foldable iPhone had moved past the concept stage.

According to The Information, the iPhone maker has assigned the project an internal code name, V68, and has contacted Asian suppliers to procure components for the smartphone.

Intense Competition From Chinese Rivals

Per Yahoo Finance, despite intense competition from Chinese rivals Honor, Huawei, and Samsung on a worldwide scale, the iPhone maker is hoping that demand for its foldable devices equipped with AI capabilities will spur sales.

Unveiling its newest foldable smartphones in early July, Samsung reduced the weight and thickness of its most expensive flagship model while adding new artificial intelligence features.

In May, Counterpoint Research released research stating that the global foldable smartphone market had its best quarterly growth rate in six quarters, with Huawei surpassing Samsung to claim the top spot. The market had grown 49% year-over-year in the first quarter.

Enhancing the Camera on At Least One iPhone Model

According to The Information, Apple is also planning to enhance the camera on at least one iPhone model. This change would allow users to mechanically control the aperture size, which might potentially allow them to create a depth-of-field effect.

Additionally, the article stated that Apple's introduction of the foldable iPhone is not guaranteed.

A request for comment from Reuters was not immediately responded to by Apple.
