Sony’s PlayStation consoles and the Final Fantasy franchise have become practically synonymous due to the many excellent titles that the game unit’s generations hosted. Recently, Square Enix announced that it would be bringing one of the franchise’s most coveted spinoffs to the PlayStation 4 in the form of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. This all-out, six-person brawler is a definite must have for fans of the main series and fighting games.
For those unfamiliar with the game, it’s an arcade-style fighting simulator that features multiple characters that span the Final Fantasy franchise. It was developed by Square in collaboration with Team Ninja, the same developers that created the critically-acclaimed Nioh, Gamespot reports.
In any case, Dissidia is a chance for fans of the series to fight each other using beloved characters from all of the games since the first. These include both villains and heroes, and there are even side characters thrown in the mix.
Players can fight each other via team-based battle where three players go up against another group of three. During the fights, players can activate special moves that fans of the games would likely find familiar. It’s a particularly balanced setup where characters from different games won’t be at a disadvantage when going against those more agile or with high-damage skills.
As Forbes notes, saying that this is a simple arcade brawler game is a severe understatement. Sure, it has fast-paced combat and a lot of flashy moves, but it also involves a lot of tactics and consideration when choosing which characters a team would have. After all, a team solely composed of melee fighters like Cloud and Zidane might have trouble with spell casters.
More than anything else, this game sets itself apart from every other fighting game in the market because it encourages teamwork. The best chance of the players beating the other group is to work together and strategize rather than jumping into the fray, headfirst. Dissidia will feature online play, which is natural since it is a team game.
