The world of sci-fi is huge and varied, but one of its most coveted concepts is having implants that can do pretty much anything. One man in Australia has proven that such a thing isn’t a dream anymore by having an implant that allows him to access trains. He is the only person to have such a bio-implant outside of a laboratory setup.
Now, it’s worth pointing out that the main topic of the story is the bio-implant, so it’s best to simply get past the fact that the inventor’s name is Meow-Ludo Disco Gamma Meow-Meow. Meow wanted to make sure that he never loses his access to public trains, which is why he decided to simply implant the access card to his arm, Futurism reports.
Much like a regular train card, the implanted device is swiped on the access point before going in. The card is actually from Opal and Meow simply removed the near-field communication (NFC) unit from the strip. The chip was then implanted right under the skin of his left arm.
To make sure that there won’t be any problems related to toxicity from the chip, it was also wrapped in a bio-compatible plastic. While that may sound simple enough, Meow is highly discouraging people to try doing the same thing at home unless they actually know what they are doing.
As he also told ABC Australia, Meow never has to worry about getting home ever again. Even if he did lose his wallet, he will still have access to the train, provided the card actually has credits. What he ultimately wants to achieve, however, is to make technology as convenient as possible.
"My goal is to have frictionless interaction with technology," Meow told the publication.
Meow also notes that the putting the chip in his arm is nothing revolutionary. The technology and the methods already exist. It’s simply the adoption rate that’s getting in the way. Oh, and there’s also the fact that the implant is actually in violation of Opal’s terms of service according to authorities.
