Since his endorsement of his former colleague Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama has become more vocal about his criticisms of his successor Donald Trump. Following Trump’s remarks that he wants to withhold federal funding for the US Postal Service, Obama criticized Trump for his repeated opposition to mail-in voting.
In a podcast with his former campaign manager David Plouffe, Obama ripped into his successor as he expressed his concerns about the integrity of the electoral process in the country. The former president’s comments follow Trump’s remarks that he does not want the postal service to receive the required funding because he does not want the federal funding to be used for mail-in voting. Trump has repeatedly claimed that mail-in voting all over the country will lead to voter fraud, a claim that has often been debunked.
“What we’ve seen in a way that is unique to modern political history is a president who is explicit in trying to discourage people from voting. What we’ve never seen before is a president say, ‘I’m going to try to actively kneecap the Postal Service to encourage voting and I will be explicit about the reason I’m doing it,’ that’s sort of unheard of, right?” said Obama.
Donald Trump’s son-in-law and White House adviser Jared Kushner touched on Obama’s comments when he spoke to CNN last week. Kushner assured that Trump is making sure that the postal service has the resources it needs to operate.
Although Obama and Biden are also admired for their friendship, Politico reports that the former president was privately skeptical about the success of his former colleague’s presidential bid. According to Obama’s former defense secretary Leon Panetta, the former vice president remained truly loyal to Obama, even at times where he disagreed, and there may have been a time where Biden felt that his loyalty went unrewarded.
Despite the bond the two former colleagues have shared even after leaving the White House in their two-term tenure, some aides loyal to the former vice president have boasted about how Biden was able to receive the nomination faster than Obama did during his first presidential campaign.
Several senior aides from the Obama-Biden administration have also somewhat expressed how the presumptive Democratic nominee practiced an outdated style of politics. The same could be said from White House officials at the time, with some even dismissing Biden in their respective memoirs.
