If there’s one thing about Bethesda that is becoming apparent, these days, is its ability to keep on milking its most profitable titles even years after their release. This has never been more apparent than the numerous versions of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that are now in the market, including re-releases, ports, and of course, Skyrim VR. In an announcement that surprised no one, Bethesda says that the PC version was coming.
According to its blog post, the video game developer noted that Skyrim VR will become available on Steam on April 13th. This version of the massively popular title was originally released on the PlayStation VR on a timed exclusive basis, which helped sell units of the headset.
Unfortunately, many complained that the platform didn’t exactly provide the best experience to make the game as compelling as its original version. Now that it’s coming to PC, where it can be played via the HTC Vive or the Oculus Rift, many reviewers are hopeful that its biggest issues can at least be addressed.
As Ars Technica notes, this is the ninth release of Skyrim since its original launch in 2011. That is a lot of times that Bethesda milked this cash cow and it seems that it’s nowhere near dry.
Fans of the game might find at least some parts of Skyrim VR on PC exciting since it should provide the definitive VR experience of the iconic title. A lot of this is thanks to the superior motion control peripherals offered by both the Vive and the Rift, though, only time will tell if they actually make a difference.
In any case, this development also touches on the relationship of Bethesda and Oculus. By adding a Rift support to the game, some are saying that perhaps this was some form of an olive branch. Things have recently soured between the two companies due to legal battles and accusations of theft.
