U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, emphasizing the urgency of reaching a Gaza ceasefire and securing the release of hostages before his term ends on January 20. Biden highlighted the importance of halting fighting to facilitate increased humanitarian aid, the White House reported.
Netanyahu informed Biden about progress in negotiations and his delegation's active involvement in Doha to finalize a hostage deal. The leaders also addressed significant regional developments, including a Lebanon ceasefire, Syria’s changing political landscape, and Iran's weakened influence.
National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan described the negotiations as “very, very close” but acknowledged challenges in securing Hamas' cooperation. He assured continued efforts to finalize an agreement during Biden’s presidency. Vice President-elect JD Vance anticipated a potential deal for U.S. hostage release in Biden’s final days in office.
Since Israel's offensive in Gaza began following Hamas' October 2023 attack that killed 1,200 and captured over 250 hostages, the conflict has claimed over 46,000 lives in Gaza, according to Palestinian health officials. The region remains devastated, with widespread displacement and a severe humanitarian crisis.
Netanyahu expressed gratitude for Biden’s unwavering support for Israel’s security and defense. Meanwhile, President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his commitment to supporting Israel and pledged to bring peace to the Middle East without detailing specific plans.
