BROOKLINE, Mass., July 31, 2017 -- Brookline Family Chiropractic Center released information on the Graston Technique® and its role in pain relief. Unlike many chiropractic methods, this technique focuses on the soft tissues of the body. It is especially useful for problems that involve ligaments and tendons, scarring, and other areas of thick non-bony tissue.
Chiropractors are best known for their work on the spine, but through the years, they have expanded their methods to include drug-free, surgery-free, treatments for other body tissues. The Graston Technique® (GT) is one that is used to treat thick, but soft, tissues like the Achilles' tendon, the tendon that attaches to the rotator cuff, plantar fasciitis, and more. It also addresses problems caused by scarring after mastectomy and other procedures, injury scarring, and similar issues.
"With this technique, the soft tissues are tested using a stainless steel instrument that glides along the external area containing the tendon, ligament, or other suspect tissue. When areas of thickened tissue are detected, we know that there is scarring, adhesion, or both in that spot. Stretching treatments are then given to break up the binding of these tissues and restore proper motion. The release of the scarred or adhered tissue stops the physical tension caused by these abnormalities and reduces the pain experienced," said Dr. W. Zev London, D.C. (Dr. Zev) of Brookline Family Chiropractic Center.
Fixing the problems detected with the Graston Technique's® instrument isn't just a matter of massaging the discovered areas. This is because body parts are interconnected, so the source of the problem may be "upstream" of the painful or stiff area. The Graston Technique® takes this into account by following what it calls the "kinetic chain" of the body. Treatments are geared to correct errors all along this chain.
Brookline Family Chiropractic Center uses the Graston Technique® to treat a wide variety of problems that involve ligaments, tendons, scar tissues, adhesions, and similar soft tissues. Unlike muscles, these tissues are tough and sinewy, so they take more than a simple massage to loosen up. The typical course of treatment involves two sessions per week for four to five weeks. This makes it an excellent option for drug-free, surgery-free treatment that works within a reasonable time frame.
