Fans can expect the upcoming “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War” to also deliver a deep story for some familiar and new faces in the franchise. With only more than a week left before its release, developers have revealed some details about the campaign gameplay allowing gamers to know what to expect from the early missions.
‘Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’ campaign gameplay: What to expect in the first mission
Players will open the campaign gameplay with a mission titled “Nowhere Left to Run.” It appears that the main goal for the story included in this segment of the game is to remind old players if the familiar elements of the “Black Ops” series while also giving newcomers a proper welcome.
An official blog post with information coming from Raven Software senior creative director Dan Vondrak, the starting mission of the “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War” campaign is confirmed to be set in a tavern in Amsterdam. The mission happens a couple of weeks before the 1981 New Year’s Day a features the game’s three main characters – CIA operatives Alex Mason, Frank Woods, and Russell Adler.
The trio arrives at the tavern to follow-up on a lead for the main mission in “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War,” which is to find a Russian spy whose only known identification is the codename Perseus. “Nowhere Left to Run is a great example of how we wanted to pay homage to the original ‘Black Ops’ in a few ways that fans will recognize,” Vondrak said.
One way the developers are doing it is by bringing back the Remote Controlled-Explosive Device or RC-XD that was introduced in the first-ever “Black Ops” game. To those that do not know, the RC-XD is that tiny remote-controlled car seen in the trailer that suddenly blows off and covers quite a significant radius of the explosion. PC Gamer also pointed out that the mere tavern setting at the first campaign mission is a nod to the first “Black Ops” game which used a bar as the setting for its first campaign mission as well.
‘Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’ release date, consoles compatibility
More details and even gameplay walkthrough guides should be revealed in the coming weeks as “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War” officially launches on Nov. 13 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It also applies for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 since these next-gen consoles arrive in stores on Nov. 10 and Nov. 12, respectively.
It should be noted, though, that PS5’s worldwide release will be delayed by a week. That means players who are NOT in North America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea will have to wait until Nov. 19 to play the “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War” on this system.
