Calling All Industry Dependent on Water: Michigan’s Thumb Area Has ½-Billion Gallons of Quality Water Annually

BAD AXE, Mich. and PORT AUSTIN, Mich., Feb. 05, 2018 -- Michigan’s Thumb Area, Bad Axe and Port Austin, known for its breath-taking sunrises, miles of pristine beaches located on Lake Huron of the Great Lakes, is rolling out the welcome wagon to industries dependent on water, with more than ½ billion gallons of high quality H2O currently being pumped out and billions more available.

According to Carl Osentoski, Huron County Regional Development Director, the “Natural Resource rich environment is ideal for industries looking to establish themselves with plenty of water along with rail, water shipping, truck and air transportation, labor and land available.

“For years we have been known as a vacation destination and agricultural community about two hours north of Detroit,” Osentoski said. “We have the resources and infrastructure required by certain industries. We have developed a Huron Regional Water Task Force to help search out potential businesses in these industries.”

Among the industries the HRWTF will be targeting are:

  • Regional Water Bottlers
  • Livestock Industry
  • Micro-Breweries
  • Distilleries
  • Soft Drink Beverage Industry
  • Green Houses
  • Food Processors for canned vegetables
  • Other industries that rely on a sustainable supply of high quality water

The Great Lakes system is a massive, multi state, bi-national ecosystem that gathers water from sources across the watershed and is deposited in glacier carved basins. Summer’s warm sun and winter's cold temperatures mellows the water into a source that is second to none. The Great Lakes represent 95 percent of the fresh water supply in the U.S.  Lake Huron is the fifth largest freshwater lake in the world and borders Michigan which is shaped like a mitten. The Port Austin/ Bad Axe area is at the “tip” of the Thumb.
