‘Captain Marvel’ officially cast Brie Larson in the titular role as Carol Danvers a.k.a. Ms. Marvel. The casting choice was announced during Marvel’s SDCC panel. Writer Kelly Sue DeConnick, famed for her work in the original comic books, expressed her excitement over Larson’s casting.
According to Deadline, Larson was officially confirmed to play Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the Marvel comic book character of the same name. The news was announced near the end of Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel that took place in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center. Marvel’s Kevin Feige made the announcement and Larson surprised audiences when she made an appearance on stage.
Reports of Larson’s casting as the titular superhero grew strong since June. The 26-year old actress rose to international prominence for her role in the Canadian-Irish independent film ‘Room’, where she received multiple accolades including an Academy Award for Best Actress. She also starred in films such as ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’, ’21 Jump Street’, ‘The Spectacular Now’, ‘The Gambler’, and ‘Trainwreck’. She is set to star in the lead role in the upcoming ‘Kong: Skull Island’ together with Tom Hiddleston.
‘Captain Marvel’ will be the first female-led superhero film in the MCU. It was originally scheduled for release on November 2, 2017 but was delayed for March 8, 2019 to make way for ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man.
According to /Film, Larson also took to Twitter to post a photograph of herself with a Marvel Studios’ cap on. She captioned the image, “Call me Captain Marvel.”
Her character is a fighter pilot endowed with alien DNA. Classified as a Power Level 8, she has superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility and reflexes and is capable of flight. She has the ability of enhanced regeneration and can blast powerful photon and stellar light from her hands and fingertips.
In the comic books, she is associated with both the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy and eventually teams up with the two groups to fight a powerful enemy.
Carol Danvers first appeared as a member of the United States Air Force in Marvel Comics’ ‘Marvel Super-Heroes #13’ published on March 1968. She debuted as Ms. Marvel in ‘Ms. Marvel #1’ published on January 1977. Since her outing, Ms. Marvel has become widely regarded as a feminist icon.
Comic book writer and Marvel freelancer Kelly Sue DeConnick expressed her enthusiasm over Larson’s casting, according to Vanity Fair. DeConnick wrote Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel debut from 2012 to 2015 and is widely considered as a catalyst for the character’s popularity in the comic book realm.
She said during a phone interview, “My dreamcasting—or the actor who is the voice in my head—is Kathleen Turner from about 1983. She could be both sexy and awkward and powerful. She could do all of those things at once.” She added, “From what I can tell, Brie Larson can do those things too. She has a gravitas and she has a power to her. But you can see she also has a sense of humor and playfulness there. I’m psyched.”
‘Captain Marvel’ is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film starring Brie Larson in the lead role. It is scheduled to premiere in theaters on March 8, 2019 in the United States. Although no director is attached as of the moment, the film will be produced by Kevin Feige with Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman writing the screenplay.
