China is preparing to retaliate against U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest tariff threat, according to the Global Times. The response is expected to include counter-tariffs and trade restrictions, specifically targeting U.S. agricultural and food products.
Trump recently announced an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports starting March 4, just weeks after imposing similar duties. In response to February’s tariffs, Beijing had already introduced import levies and controls on rare earth exports. Now, China is reportedly considering “strong, powerful countermeasures,” according to sources cited by the Global Times.
Tensions between the U.S. and China continue to escalate, exacerbated by trade disputes and the Biden administration’s strict restrictions on technology exports to China. Trump defended the tariffs, stating they were necessary to pressure China, Canada, and Mexico into reducing the flow of illegal substances into the U.S. The potential for a 25% duty on imports from Canada and Mexico adds further strain to global trade relations.
With both countries locked in a tit-for-tat economic battle, the latest tariff war threatens to deepen economic instability and disrupt global supply chains. As China weighs its next move, the ongoing dispute raises concerns over broader economic consequences for businesses and consumers worldwide.
