Chinese knockoffs are a major concern among western consumers, but it seems the country’s local customers also have the same misgivings. This is apparently why a Chinese man bit an iPhone battery to see if it was the real deal. This might have worked with gold or silver coins, but it was an especially stupid thing to do with a battery. The unit exploded and it was caught on camera.
One of the first to report on this rather startling development was Taiwan News, indicating that on Friday (Jan. 19th), a man in China went into an electronics store to find a replacement for his iPhone battery. Now, it’s important to point out here that Apple only allows specific third-party outlets to handle its devices. As this incident proved, the Cupertino firm may have had the right idea.
In any case, as CCTV footage clearly shows, the man then decides to bite into the battery that he was provided, which caused it to burst into flames and explode, startling other customers in the store. The clip was then posted on the video-sharing site miaopai.com, which garnered over 4.2 million views since being uploaded on Jan. 20th. Naturally, someone decided to share the footage with others, which is why it has since been ported to YouTube.
The act of biting into an object such as coins or accessories has long been considered a way to tell if something was real or fake. However, as viewers have commented multiple times, this method does not work on electronics of any kind.
Fortunately, it would seem that there were no injuries sustained as a result of the incident. While the customer who caused the commotion has not exactly been named in any of the western news reports, anyone who recognizes him thanks to the videos will likely never let him live this down.
