Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed on Wednesday that she spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump following a high-profile security operation that resulted in the death of notorious drug cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, widely known as “El Mencho.” The call came after Mexican security forces carried out a raid on Sunday that eliminated the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) boss, triggering a wave of retaliatory violence across several regions of Mexico.

During her regular morning press conference, Sheinbaum said President Trump reached out to discuss the rapidly evolving security situation in Mexico. She explained that the operation targeting El Mencho was carefully planned and executed with support from U.S. intelligence agencies. According to the president, intelligence-sharing between Mexico and the United States played a critical role in tracking and neutralizing one of the world’s most wanted drug traffickers.

The death of El Mencho marks a significant development in Mexico’s ongoing fight against organized crime and powerful drug cartels. As the longtime leader of CJNG, Oseguera was considered one of the most dangerous figures in global narcotics trafficking, with his organization linked to widespread drug smuggling, violence, and criminal operations stretching beyond Mexico’s borders.

However, authorities have reported outbreaks of cartel-related violence in the aftermath of the raid, as CJNG members responded to the loss of their leader. Security forces remain on high alert in multiple states to prevent further escalation and protect civilians.

The conversation between Sheinbaum and Trump underscores continued U.S.-Mexico cooperation on security, intelligence-sharing, and anti-cartel operations. As both nations confront the ongoing challenges of drug trafficking and cross-border crime, the killing of El Mencho could reshape the balance of power within Mexico’s criminal underworld and influence regional security dynamics in the months ahead.
