Internet carriers are currently at war with each other to provide the best unlimited data plan to customers, with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint well ahead of the pack. Comcast is trying its best to catch up but its offerings so far leave much to be desired. Its latest attempt in the “unlimited mobile data” arena is a huge flop by throttling internet speeds once users surpass 20GB.
The new plans won’t be available until at least the end of June, but Comcast already released the prices of the packages that users can choose from, Ars Technica reports. Among these packages is the $12/GB that light mobile consumers can get, but for power users, the unlimited data plan that costs up to $65 a month will be available.
It’s also worth noting that Comcast will only be giving these plans to customers of its Comcast Home Internet service. More than that, once users exceed 20GB in data consumption, the internet speed will be throttled. Even worse is the fact that the throttled speed will be at a measly 750Kbps, which is just about enough to make using social media sites tolerable. Users can forget watching videos, though.
This new deal could even go a long way towards hurting the company’s wireless internet ambitions in order to staunch its bleeding of consumers who are less and less interested in traditional cable TV setups. As WIRED notes, Comcast originally wanted to be a wireless internet provider in order to entice users to stay. It even had to work out a deal with Verizon and everything.
Unfortunately, it seems that its decision to make the change is just too little too late. With competition heating up among the various mobile internet carriers and the video streaming services, there might be no room for a traditional company like Comcast to remain relevant.
