U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem was hospitalized on Tuesday after suffering an allergic reaction, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The incident occurred in Washington, D.C., and reports from CNN and CBS News confirmed that Noem was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
"Secretary Noem had an allergic reaction today. She was transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution. She is alert and recovering," said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in an official statement.
Noem, 53, is a key figure in President Donald Trump’s administration, leading efforts on immigration enforcement, national security, cybersecurity, and emergency management. As head of the DHS, she plays a crucial role in coordinating federal responses to both internal and external threats to the United States.
The incident comes at a time when DHS is under heightened scrutiny amid Trump’s renewed push for stricter border control measures and enhanced national security protocols. Noem, a former governor and longtime Trump ally, has been instrumental in implementing these directives.
Photographs from June 12, 2025, show Secretary Noem holding a press conference in Los Angeles, days before the medical emergency. Her condition is currently stable, and officials say she is expected to make a full recovery.
The DHS has not released details on what triggered the allergic reaction, but emphasized that her hospitalization was precautionary. The department continues to monitor her health and will provide updates as necessary.
Noem’s brief health scare highlights the pressures facing top officials as they navigate complex national security challenges. Despite the incident, DHS operations remain uninterrupted.
