Dakota Johnson’s new movie role was a challenging one to perform, according to the actress. In a recent interview, she said that one specific sequence in her upcoming supernatural horror film, “Suspiria,” was a “terrifying” experience for her.
The 28-year-old actress has evidently moved on to different roles since becoming popular as the face of Anastasia Steele in the “Fifty Shades” movie adaptations. For one, Johnson will be playing the dancing protege and main protagonist Susie Bannion in the remake of the 1977 film “Suspiria.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Dakota Johnson shared more details about her upcoming movie character. In the 2018 version of the Italian film, Susie goes to the Markos Dance Academy in Berlin to take the place of another dance student who recently disappeared. Obviously, playing the role of top dance student means Johnson needed to film several scenes where she needed to be dancing. But the actress told EW that she is actually not a dancer.
“I trained on and off for about a year before we started filming, but I’m not a professional dancer. It was terrifying,” Johnson admitted. It is also interesting that despite feeling intimidated by what her acting role demanded, she finished making the movie that was specifically written to include more dancing scenes compared to its 1977 counterpart.
Director Luca Guadagnino also told the publication, “In Dario Argento’s film, you see mostly lessons; there is not a grand dance moment in the movie … We felt that dance needed to be part of the process of witchcraft.” Guadagnino added that Dakota Johnson’s dancing scene is linked to a “greater ritual that is at the core of the film.”

Johnson also teased that the movie will feature a scene where she is dancing in a witchcraft-like trance. “We were moving on the points of a pentagram, as though the dance were casting a spell,” the actress said.

Another major role in the film is filled by Tilda Swinton, who portrays the dance school administrator named Madame Blanc. Swinton’s Madame Blanc will immediately favor her new student as Dakota Johnson’s Susie shows off her fascinating dance skills. “Suspiria” premieres in Italy on Sept. 1 and in the United States on Nov. 2.
