As Peter Capaldi is expected to leave “Doctor Who” by year end, there has been much speculation on who’s going to take the mantle as the next Doctor.
Apparently, the betting trends to be in the favor of actor Kris Marshall, who is known for his role as a British lad looking for love in the US in the romance comedy “Love Actually.” The Independent reported that bets for the actor has been suspended, which points to a possibility that the actor could become the next Time Lord.
Marshall’s name in the running was a surprise considering the fact that Tilda Swinton was the current favorite, Den of Geek said. Swinton, who leads at a 7/2 odds, bested Marshall who is at 4/1. On the other hand, Chris Chibnall, who is expected to take over after Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffatt’s departure from the BBC One series this year, has not denied the possibility of considering a woman as the new Time Lord:
"The creative possibilities are endless. but I have a very clear sense of what we’re going to do, without even knowing who’s going to play the part."
Meanwhile, Capaldi is set to leave the series with a bang, thanks to the concluding episodes 11 and 12 of Season 10, along with his all-time favourite foes – the chilling Mondasion Cybermen. Radiotimes describes one of the Time Lord’s greatest foes, as follows:
“The original incarnations of the Cybermen – who hail from Earth's twin planet of Mondas which was knocked out of orbit when the moon formed – are very different in appearance to their modern-day metal successors, preferring silver jumpsuits enhanced with mechanical chest plates and spooky flexible masks that give them a ghostly appearance.”
The episodes will be Capaldi’s last appearance in the series before his character regenerates in the Christmas special, Radio Times reported.
