To this day, twice-impeached former President Donald Trump continues to peddle his false claims of election fraud. In a new book by ABC journalist Jonathan Karl, former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski made it clear that Trump’s “big lie” was an attempt to save face.
Excerpts from Karl’s book, “Betrayal,” shared by the Huffington Post, revealed the interview where Lewandowski claimed that the former president was hoping to cast doubt on the 2020 election results so he could say he did not lose the race to Joe Biden. Lewandowski’s comments to Karl marked a rare moment when someone closely affiliated with the former president to admit that Trump’s false claim of election fraud was nothing more than an attempt to save face.
“He knows it’s over,” Lewandowski told Karl. “He just wants to create enough doubt about Biden’s victory so that when he leaves he can say he didn’t lose and that it was stolen from him.”
The false claims of election fraud resulted in numerous attempts to contest the results in the courts, only for over 60 lawsuits to be dismissed. The false claim ultimately led to the Capitol insurrection on January 6, the incident of which was the reason for Trump’s second impeachment days before he was to leave office.
More details about the insurrection and the former president and his allies’ attempts to overturn the 2020 elections have since been revealed in the past several weeks.
The former president remains to have a hold on the Republican Party and has been widely speculated to become a frontrunner for the party in a possible 2024 bid to challenge Biden or another Democratic candidate.
According to one of his most vocal critics, his own niece Dr. Mary Trump, the former president may risk another election loss in a 2024 bid, noting that her uncle may be keen to run for the presidency again to regain the protection he once had.
Speaking in the “New Abnormal” podcast for The Daily Beast, Dr. Trump revealed how she is becoming more convinced that her uncle may run for the presidency again.
“If Donald gets to the point where he believes that if he ran, he couldn’t lose, why wouldn’t he?” said Dr. Trump. “He’s in so much trouble legally, criminally, and civilly.”
“What gets completely left out of the narrative is the absolutely horrific hand Biden was dealt. Look what he came into office having to deal with,” added Dr. Trump.
