The coronavirus has not just affected the world on a medical or health scale. It has also affected the economy, and President Donald Trump along with Republican lawmakers are determined to try and save it in time for the elections in November.
Politico reports that Trump along with other Republican officials in the White House is trying to develop ways to be able to salvage the economy due to the coronavirus pandemic. With the president’s advisers taking part, they are reportedly trying to develop some economic stimulus measures which can boost the economy despite the potential spreading of the coronavirus in the United States as cases of people infected rise. They tried to get Federal Interest to cut interest rates, to which an emergency cut was only given to them Tuesday.
However, despite being able to get that cut, announcements from multinational companies in the country hint that the country’s economy may be in trouble over the next few months leading up to the elections. One of the aspects Trump is known for boasting about during his campaigns is the economy, and thus it is easy to see why his administration is determined to save it as part of his reelection campaign.
While this sudden action is something that Republicans are generally against and that Democrats generally push for, some GOP members believe that this still poses a threat to Trump’s reelection. One senior administration official expressed their doubts regarding the measures they plan to take. “I don’t think it’s a good policy. The whole litany of temporary measures to stimulate the economy...I don’t think it works.”
Previously, Trump has proposed shutting down the border between the United States and Mexico in order to prevent the coronavirus from spreading. Vice president Mike Pence, whom Trump appointed to spearhead the coronavirus task force, said that the country will issue a travel ban to certain countries in an effort to prevent more cases. They will issue bans on non-American citizens who have visited Iran in the last 14 days.
The US State Department will also place a level four travel advisory on South Korea and Italy, two countries outside of China with the highest number of fatalities, nearing 100.
