President Donald Trump delivered this year’s State of the Union address, and many were not surprised regarding what he would be talking about, which is himself. Following his speech, many slammed him on social media for seemingly congratulating himself for his address.
After the address, Trump tweeted, “It was a great and triumphant evening for our Country, thank you for all the nice remarks and wonderful reviews of my State of the Union speech. It was my great honor to have done it!” which many netizens figured that he was congratulating himself. Trump shunned the conventions of the usual State of the Union address, one of which was also using the address as an opportunity to present the Presidential Medal of Freedom to conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh. The address was finished with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tearing up Trump’s speech behind him, causing even more of a buzz among those who watched the event.
Trump was hit with a wave of criticism for his self-congratulating tweet. One commenter replied, saying that it was a “pathetic, reprehensible, pile of lies.” Another commenter said that those who will fact-check the claims he made in his speech will not be able to keep up. Some cheered on Pelosi for her ripping up the speech behind Trump and said that they were on her side as she received backlash for her actions by Trump supporters, including vice president Mike Pence. “Nobody remembers anything about it other than Speaker Nancy Pelosi ripping up your speech and causing so many Republicans to foam at the mouth with faux outrage even though they have no problems ripping up our Constitution every day,” tweeted Eugene Gu, in response to Trump’s tweet.
Other commenters simply said that it was not a good speech. In addition to presenting Limbaugh with a Medal of Freedom, Trump reportedly made several false and misleading claims regarding the work his administration has done in terms of policies.
Trump faced an impeachment trial at the Senate on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The predominantly Republican Senate voted to acquit him on both charges.
