Britain, France, and Greece have deployed air-defence assets and warships to Cyprus after drones targeted the Royal Air Force (RAF) Akrotiri base, escalating security concerns in the Eastern Mediterranean. The coordinated military response highlights growing tensions in the region following recent U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory actions.
According to senior Cypriot officials, an Iranian-made Shahed drone struck the runway at RAF Akrotiri after flying at low altitude to evade radar detection. The drone was believed to have been launched by Iran-backed Hezbollah militants from Lebanon. Two additional drones approaching the island were successfully intercepted before reaching their targets.
RAF Akrotiri is sovereign British territory but lies close to civilian communities in Cyprus. Following the attack, hundreds of residents in nearby areas evacuated their homes as authorities assessed the threat. Cyprus, an EU member state with limited defence capabilities and no operational air force, has recently intensified its military modernization efforts, including acquiring Israel’s Barak MX air-defence system to strengthen protection against missile and drone threats.
European allies quickly responded by sending additional military resources. France announced it would deploy anti-missile and anti-drone defence systems along with the French Navy frigate Languedoc. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed the vessel could arrive in Cypriot waters within hours as part of a broader effort to reinforce regional security.
The United Kingdom also expanded its presence in the Eastern Mediterranean by dispatching the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon, equipped with the advanced Sea Viper missile system. Two Wildcat helicopters armed with Martlet missiles will accompany the destroyer to improve aerial threat detection and response. British authorities noted that RAF F-35B fighter jets had already intercepted Iranian drones over Jordan in recent operations.
Greece joined the defence initiative by sending four F-16 fighter jets and two frigates, one equipped with the Centauros anti-drone jamming system designed to detect and neutralize low-flying drones.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed London’s commitment to Cyprus’ security, while French and regional defence forces continue coordinating under existing security agreements to monitor developments across the volatile Eastern Mediterranean.
